Cedar Waxwing

On June 8, 18 birders, ranging in experience from world travelers to novices, came for Loudoun Wildlife Conservancy’s monthly walk at Banshee Reeks Nature Preserve. It was a beautiful morning with temperatures in the high 60s. Before we left the parking lot, we were rewarded with views of a pair of Cedar Waxwings making multiple trips, carrying nesting materials from a tree over the visitor center to an area beyond the parking lot.
Although a number of species were only heard, we were treated to some nice looks at an Acadian Flycatcher, a pair of Common Yellowthroats, Orchard Orioles, and lots of Indigo Buntings. Highlights included a Blue Grosbeak and some very quick glimpses of a Northern Parula and a Red-headed Woodpecker. Also, a Northern Mockingbird was spotted on a nest in a tree adjacent to the parking lot as we were leaving. The walk was led by Dori Rhodes and Jane Yocom.
We were also treated to a number of butterflies including Zebra Swallowtail, Eastern Tiger Swallowtail, Fritillaries, Red Admiral, an Angle Wing, an Emperor, Little Wood Satyr, Silvery Checkerspot and a Cabbage Butterfly.
And for those on the walk who wanted to know what was in the Bluebird Box down near Goose Creek… a Bluebird nest on top of a House Wren nest with 4 tiny Bluebird nestlings 2-3 days old!
