Christmas Bird Count

Loudoun Wildlife’s Christmas Bird Count

The Christmas Bird Count (CBC) is an annual national event the National Audubon Society started in 1899. (Read the full history here.) Whether you’re a beginner or an expert birder, the CBC is a fun way to go out and document how the birds in Loudoun County are doing.

Participants are added to teams that count in a sector of the count circle that the Central Loudoun Christmas Count covers. Loudoun Wildlife has been contributing to the CBC since 1997, and our 2025 count took place on Monday, December 29. Read the full report and see some photos here.

Read about our previous counts and explore the data going back to 1997 on the  Christmas Bird Count Data and Reports page.

The 2026 CBC will take place on Monday, December 28. Look for more information later in the year about how you can participate!

The Count Circle

The Central Loudoun count circle (which is divided into sectors) has a 15-mile diameter (7.5 mile radius) and covers 177 square miles of Loudoun’s countryside: north to Waterford, south to Aldie, east to Ashburn, and west to Purcellville.

View the count circle as an interactive map or download a copy to print.

In addition to the Central Loudoun CBC, which is organized by Loudoun Wildlife Conservancy, there are five other CBCs with part of a count circle falling within Loudoun County. View these other count circles on an interactive map.
