Christmas Bird Count

Join Us for the Christmas Bird Count

We invite you to join us for the Christmas Bird Count (CBC), an annual event the National Audubon Society started in 1899 and that takes place across the country. The 2024 count is scheduled for Saturday, December 28. Whether you’re a beginner or an expert birder, this is a fun way to go out and document how the birds are doing in Loudoun County.  We’ll put you in a team to count in a sector of the count circle that the Central Loudoun Christmas Count covers. After the counting we will meet for a Tally Rally in Ashburn, where we will share stories of the day’s highlights.

Read about our previous counts and explore the data going back to 1997 on the  Christmas Bird Count Data and Reports page.

Sign up below (by December 22) to join us for a few hours or for a full day. It’s a great activity for adults and families alike.

The Count Circle

The Central Loudoun count circle (which is divided into sectors) has a 15-mile diameter (7.5 mile radius) and covers 177 square miles of Loudoun’s countryside: north to Waterford, south to Aldie, east to Ashburn, and west to Purcellville.

View the count circle as an interactive map or download a copy to print.

In addition to the Central Loudoun CBC, which is organized by Loudoun Wildlife Conservancy, there are five other CBCs with part of a count circle falling within Loudoun County. View these other count circles on an interactive map.
