The highlights of a relatively quiet bird walk at the Blue Ridge Center for Environmental Stewardship February 21 were a Spotted Salamander, a pair of Black Vultures at their nest site, good looks at both Brown Creepers and Golden-crowned Kinglets, and a pair of Red-shouldered Hawks sitting together and hunting together. While it wasn’t that cold (34 to 37 degrees) and the rain held off until right after we had finished, the eight participants in the walk found it pretty damp and rather overcast and the trails very muddy.
The Loudoun Wildlife Conservancy schedules two regular bird walks every month, one at the Blue Ridge Center for Environmental Stewardship every fourth Saturday of the month, and one at the Banshee Reeks Nature Preserve every second Saturday of the month. Everyone is welcome at these walks.
