Nida became a Loudoun Wildlife member at the end of 2021 and immediately began volunteering with us. She has helped at a couple of Native Plant Sales and is a camera operator with the Eagle Cam program. In April 2022 she discovered our Bluebird Monitoring program and spearheaded efforts to establish a nestbox trail at the Hal and Berni Hanson Regional Park.
Nida “feels most happy and at home” when camping in Wadi Rum (a UNESCO World Heritage site located in southern Jordan, near the border with Saudi Arabia) and Jordan’s Southern desert where she enjoys stargazing and bird watching. She says, “Many people think that there is nothing there but arid landscape and there is not much to do in the desert. That is not the case in Jordan whose deserts are full of various forms of wildlife, amazing flowers, herbs, trees, and birds.” Nida highly recommends looking at the guidebook The State of Jordan’s Birds to get an idea of the biodiversity and richness in Jordan which “is known as having one of the major and important routes for bird migration.”
In closing, Nida says, “For me there is nothing more beautiful than watching the Sinai Rose-Finch while drinking Bedouin tea, watching camels quietly pass by, and enjoying the rose-colored mountains.”
