On November 6, 13 participants gathered on a perfect fall day for the Writing in Nature workshop. We discussed fall migration in Virginia, noting that Loudoun Wildlife Conservancy is in the process of migrating to a new location in January.

Participants wrote about the location and climate they would like to migrate to and live in, at least for part of the year. Sunshine was a big factor, as was warmth. Each person described their climate needs, some describing their childhood location and others remembering a trip to a place that to them was ideal.
We read two poems: “Wild Geese” by Mary Oliver and “A Butterfly Life” by Sarah Zylstra. The Oliver poem struck many as apt, with the wild geese “heading home again.” Most people said they dreaded the cold and gray season we are about to experience.
After the workshop ended, BJ Lecrone and workshop leader Nancy Morgan headed over to Rust Nature Sanctuary. The writing program was initially held at Rust when it began, and that will be our new home starting in January.
Join us on December 4 for the last Writing in Nature workshop held at the Gatehouse in Morven Park.
