Yellow-throated Warbler
Despite being overcast and somewhat muddy at Algonkian Regional Park, 16 birders spent the morning of June 15 looking for birds. In the parking lot while organizing ourselves, we found many different bird species including a flyover Green Heron and a flock of Cedar Waxwings. Shortly after starting down the trail along the Potomac River, we found our bird of the day: a Yellow-throated Warbler! Yellow-throated Warblers are found in the park, but not commonly in June and not generally in this stand of trees. This bird’s disheveled appearance convinced us that it was probably a bird born this year.
Throughout the rest of the walk, we found many of the expected species including Eastern Wood-Pewee, Acadian Flycatcher, Orchard Oriole and Eastern Kingbird. As we returned from our walk, we spotted a Baltimore Oriole sitting out in full sight and also a Blue Grosbeak singing in a distant set of trees. All told, we found 46 species of birds.
