Twenty birders visited Algonkian Park for the monthly bird walk on an overcast, but comfortable, last day of summer seeking warblers. And they found lots by straining their necks to glimpse the backlit tails and bellies as the warblers foraged high in the trees. At least that is the way the story started. At the end of the walk, the group found a flock in much shorter trees and were able to see many of the warblers (Northern Parula, Magnolia Warbler, Bay-breasted Warbler and several others) in better light. In fact, the walk was so fun, that half the group continued over to the other side of the park and were rewarded with finding more warblers along with Rose-breasted Grosbeaks, Swainson’s Thrush and a very exciting Blue-winged x Golden-winged Warbler hybrid! A Philadelphia Vireo even put in an appearance.
The walk was lead by Bryan Henson, Allison Gallo, Diane Woolverton and Matt Felperin. All together, the group found 60 species of birds. The full lists can be found on eBird at: https://ebird.org/checklist/S274716520 and https://ebird.org/checklist/S274716452.
