By Linda Millington
Christine Perdue and I led a Loudoun Wildlife Conservancy-sponsored walk at a private farm in Upperville, Virginia. The property owner mows late in the season so the fields are perfect nesting habitat for the threatened grassland species Bobolinks, which have been breeding there in large numbers for years. Bobolinks were plentiful chasing each other over the fields and perching on tussocks of grass and wood fence posts. We also enjoyed close-up singing Grasshopper Sparrows, Blue Grosbeaks in the tree tops, and a noisy family of Common Ravens with two recently fledged young. We found warblers including Bay Breasted, Black-throated Blue and Chestnut-sided by sight and sound in the woods. The list is below and is proof that proper stewardship of land with an eye on conservation really does work.
