January 2014
Loudoun County Atlasers,
We made it! Data collection for our Bird Atlas officially ended December 31, 2013 and we certainly finished strong. Highlights from December include Snowy Owl and Rough-legged Hawk at Dulles Airport in Herndon 3, Sandhill Crane, Horned Lark, and Snow Bunting in Waterford 4, Short-eared Owl in Round Hill 4, and Red-breasted Nuthatch in Waterford 1. Highlights from the Central Loudoun Christmas Bird Count include Vesper Sparrow, Northern Saw-whet Owl, Merlin, Red-breasted Merganser, Virginia Rail, and Horned Grebe. Wow!
Please enter any outstanding data into the online atlas database at your earliest convenience. If you would like help entering your data or have any questions please don’t hesitate to ask. Once all the data is entered, we will work with the fantastic folks at USGS Patuxent to begin analyzing the data and composing the final publications. I will keep you updated as we move along.
Thanks again to all of you for making the Bird Atlas such a success. Your enthusiasm, knowledge, and dedication continue to inspire me.
Happy New Year and Happy Birding!
