Each survey has designated rain dates. If more than ½ inch of rain has fallen in urban areas or 1 inch in rural areas during the week leading up to the event, we’ll move to the rain date. If heavy rain or storms are forecast, the survey will also be rescheduled to the rain date. Please check availability for all dates before signing up.

Coming up! Salt Watch Kickoff (Oct. 24: 2:00 – 3:30 p.m.)

Join Loudoun Wildlife Conservancy at Rust Library to launch our sixth season of Salt Watch, a hands-on community science program that tracks road salt pollution in our local streams and advocates for smarter salting practices.

Amy Ulland, Stream Monitoring Program Coordinator, will begin with a presentation about why monitoring chloride levels matters for clean water, wildlife, and healthy communities and share some of our past data. Then participants will take part in a hands-on demo to see just how easy Salt Watch is to do.

This project is perfect for families, couples, individuals and school groups. Monitoring takes less than 15 minutes, supplies are free, and volunteers collect data once a month year-round, with additional sampling after winter weather events. All results are uploaded using a simple Google form and contribute to both local advocacy and a nationwide map of road salt pollution.

November 1, 10:00 am – 3:00 pm: First Annual Pumpkin Smash

The Loudoun Wildlife Conservancy (LWC) is seeking four volunteers to help share information about the organization’s mission and sell nature-themed merchandise at the First Annual Pumpkin Smash event at Tuscarora Creek Park, located at 425 Solitude Court SE, Leesburg, VA 20175, from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

During this event, residents of the Town of Leesburg are invited to bring their jack-o’-lanterns and pumpkins to be smashed and collected in a dumpster for composting. This fun and educational community event will feature a variety of vendors and organizations dedicated to environmental stewardship and sustainability.

Volunteers will have the opportunity to engage with attendees, promote the work of LWC, and help raise awareness about wildlife conservation and other environmental messaging including leave the leaves for wildlife habitat. Please register at LWC – First Annual Pumpkin Smash!

November 7 — JK Black Oak Wildlife Sanctuary Work Day

Join us from 9:00am to 12:00pm at JK Black Oak in Lucketts to plant native trees around the Pin Oak vernal pool. 20 Volunteers Needed (minimum age 16). Registration Required. Note: to protect the environmentally sensitive habitat, Black Oak is not open for general public access. Learn more and sign up.
