Seventeen birders, led by Bryan Henson, Scott Harris and Bruce Hill, visited Algonkian Park for the monthly bird walk on August 17. Ospreys and Bald Eagles put on a great display of fish catching and fish stealing. A Blue Grosbeak serenaded the group as we walked down the trail. More than 50 swallows perched on a bare tree along the river’s edge, and the group was able to pick out a Bank Swallow. This gave us an opportunity to talk about how to differentiate different species of swallows.
Farther down the trail, an eagle eye spotted a Saddleback Caterpillar. At the end of the trail, Green Herons and a Belted Kingfisher flew back and forth. We found a total of 38 species of birds and enjoyed the summer day. The eBird checklist can be viewed at: https://ebird.org/checklist/S267885706.
