The May 6 Celebrate Birds walk took place on a beautiful spring morning after a night of heavy rain that came from the south. Joe Coleman, Mary Ann Good and Pat Whittle led eight birders and found 63 species at the Goodstone Inn (located a few miles north of Middleburg). Because of the previous night’s heavy rain, the group did not take the regular loop route along the Goose Creek, instead walking on trails through, and bordering, the property’s meadows.
Within a few minutes of beginning the walk, the group had great views of a beautiful Blue Grosbeak and concluded the walk with a Ruby-throated Hummingbird perched high in the trees above our cars. In between, we were happy to find two Green Herons, three Red-headed Woodpeckers, six Purple Martins, three Grasshopper Sparrows (one of which perched close by and sang its beautiful twinkling song for us), a late White-crowned Sparrow, a dozen Eastern Meadowlarks and six warbler species. Some of the group were also fortunate enough to see a Bobolink perched high in a tree.
