Volunteer work days at JK Black Oak will start up again on April 5, weather permitting. These monthly events take place April through December, usually on the first Saturday of the month. Since the sanctuary is not open to the public, work days provide a way to get to know the property and enjoy working in nature with other volunteers. Check out some of the photos of volunteers in action.
This year we will primarily be working on two vernal pool restoration projects (which are funded by grant from Microsoft in collaboration with the Society for Ecological Restoration). Both projects will involve clearing invasives and planting native trees and shrubs. One of the pools (the Pin Oak pool) will also have a deer exclusion fence installed around the perimeter, similar to the ones we installed in the oak-hickory forest in 2022/2023.
Registration for the work days opens approximately one month in advance, and sign up is through the event calendar. Please note that volunteers must be at least 16 years old to participate, and the work is often strenuous.
