In the season that Monarchs and other butterflies perform their miraculous transformation from egg to larvae, chrysalis and adult, seven workshop participants gathered on September 7 to contemplate how change and transformation occur in their lives. Quoting the poet Maggie Smith’s analogy of life being like a series of Russian Dolls with the child, teenager, young adult, and elder tucked inside each of us, the group discussed how this metaphor might relate to their own experience. Poems by May Sarton and MS Moem entitled “Metamorphosis” were woven into the discussion and activities. To reestablish our link with nature, each person searched the Gatehouse environment for evidence of change and returned to the picnic tables to share their discoveries.
