Lynn Lothman poured a lot of love into the quilt she donated to Loudoun Wildlife Conservancy to raffle in conjunction with the Annual Meeting on June 4. Nature’s Gifts is really two quilts in one: one side is an art quilt displaying machine-embroidered wildlife while the other side features a more traditional quilt made with squares and triangles. This lovely, vibrant quilt combines batik fabrics on both sides. Nature’s Gifts is a twin-size quilt measuring 66” x 85” and can be machine washed and dried. It will be on display at the Leesburg festival booth on April 15-16, the Native Plant Sale on April 22 and the Annual Meeting on June 4.
Lynn’s dual passion for nature and textiles overlap quite often in her quilting process. She has been cutting up fabric and sewing it back together for more than twenty years. Lynn is a member of the Waterford Quilt Guild and believes in preserving the rich history and tradition of quilting. She enjoys sharing her knowledge and understanding of the art form when she can.
When living in Indonesia for six years, Lynn fell in love with quilting. The textiles of the islands intrigued her and she found the organic communal effort in the production of cloth endearing. Batik is the traditional cloth of Indonesia and each distinct design represents a different region, unique culture and history. The weaving, dyeing and waxing of the cloth is all done by hand with primitive tools and created in conjunction with nature.
Lynn now quilts for pure enjoyment and the artistry inspired by the colors, patterns, plants and animals in nature — the environment where she feels most at home. Lynn’s quilts highlight her love, understanding and respect of the natural world. She says, “My greatest joy is that my creation brings joy to others.”
