SUMMARY:Butterfly Walk at Sweet Run State Park\, Sawmill Entrance
DESCRIPTION:Join Loudoun Wildlife Conservancy and Virginia Master Naturalist Anne Ellis on a leisurely walk along “Butterfly Alley” at Sweet Run State Park. This will be a slow walk appropriate for families. If you are planning to participate in Loudoun Wildlife Conservancy’s annual butterfly count on August 2\, this will be a great time to brush up on your identification skills. We will meet at the parking lot at the end of Sawmill Road. Limit 16 (ages 5 and up).  Registration required. \nSweet Run State Park is located just north of Neersville.  Directions to the Sawmill Road parking lot:  from eastern Loudoun County\, take Rt 7 west to Rt 9 west; at the light after Hillsboro traffic circles\, bear right onto Harpers Ferry Road; turn left on Sawmill Rd (about 5 miles). DESCRIPTION:This is the 29th year that Loudoun Wildlife Conservancy has participated in the North American Butterfly Association (NABA) annual Butterfly Count. Our efforts give researchers at NABA a snapshot of how our favorite pollinators are faring. Teams of experts\, enthusiasts\, and novices spend the day hunting high and low for as many butterflies as they can find within the count circle — it’s a big area and we need your help!  No experience necessary and all ages are welcome. There is a $3 fee per adult\, but Loudoun Wildlife Conservancy members and children under 18 participate for free. SUMMARY:Work Day at JK Black Oak Wildlife Sanctuary
DESCRIPTION:JK Black Oak Wildlife Sanctuary is a beautiful 89-acre wildlife preserve located in Lucketts.  Loudoun Wildlife purchased the property in 2020 to preserve this globally rare wetland\, which is home to a wonderful diversity of unique species.  This morning we’ll be working on the LeSebre Pool restoration project\, removing invasives and hauling away metal taken from the pool.  Additional information and directions to the site will be provided a couple of days before the event. Due to the environmentally sensitive habitat and rare species\, JK Black Oak is not open for general public access. 20 volunteers needed – volunteers must be at least 16 years old.   Registration required. \nPlease note: Work days require physical activity\, which may be strenuous\, such as digging and sawing in weedy\, overgrown areas. Please be aware that poison ivy and ticks may present. DESCRIPTION:Vernal pools\, also known as ephemeral or seasonal pools\, are an important yet often overlooked wetland. As the name suggests\, they are temporary pools only holding water for a brief time each year. During that time\, they are home to mysterious shrimp\, developing dragonfly larvae\, and are critical breeding grounds for several of our local salamander and frog species. SUMMARY:Fall Native Plant Sale at Morven Park
DESCRIPTION:Did you know that fall is the best time to plant trees\, shrubs and other perennials? A huge selection of native plants will be available from five native plant nurseries: Nature By Design\, Hill House Farm & Nursery\, Seven Bends Nursery\, Watermark Woods and  Yellow House Natives. The Sale takes place at the visitor parking lot (access via main entrance on Old Waterford Road). Our knowledgeable volunteers will be on hand to help you choose plants suited to your space and goals. We’ll also have TLC\, a fertilizer and deer deterrent\, to give away. \nAt Loudoun Wildlife Conservancy’s information booth you can learn about our programs and how you can volunteer for them. Our Wild Shop will be there with merchandise for sale.  Want to learn more about some of our community partners? SUMMARY:JK Black Oak Wildlife Sanctuary Open House
DESCRIPTION:Please Note: Pets are not allowed at the Sanctuary. \nExperience the beauty of JK Black Oak firsthand and learn more about the vernal pools\, restoration projects and ongoing community science projects.  During this open house\, the sanctuary is open to the public with no registration required. \nStop by the Loudoun Wildlife booth to learn about our programs and our advocacy efforts to protect JK Black Oak from the Rt. 15 Lucketts bypass. \nFor the first time ever\, several of the trails will be open for self-guided tours with information signs along the way and roving volunteers to answer questions.  We will also have three information stations staffed with volunteers where you can learn about: \n\nAmphibians and reptiles – Which species have been found and why amphibians require vernal pools.\nBat monitoring – Acoustic monitoring has documented nine species of bats.\nForest restoration – We are using deer exclosure fences to protect tree seedlings.\n\nParking will be in the field at the corner of Stumptown and New Valley Church Roads in Lucketts\, and a volunteer will direct you to the entrance of the sanctuary. \nAlthough you will be walking on mowed trails\, ticks may still be present and insect repellant is recommended. \nIn conjunction with the open house\, there are two guided walks that require registration: a bird walk at 8:00am and a nature walk at 11:00am.
