SUMMARY:Discover Vernal Pools
DESCRIPTION:Vernal pools\, also known as ephemeral or seasonal pools\, are an important yet often overlooked wetland. As the name suggests\, they are temporary pools only holding water for a brief time each year. During that time\, they are home to mysterious shrimp\, developing dragonfly larvae\, and are critical breeding grounds for several of our local salamander and frog species. These vernal pools are in rapid decline due to development. Join us for a look into the wildlife that use these pools and what we can all do to help protect these sensitive wetlands. SUMMARY:Fall Native Plant Sale at Morven Park
DESCRIPTION:Did you know that fall is the best time to plant trees\, shrubs and other perennials? A huge selection of native plants will be available from five native plant nurseries: Nature By Design\, Hill House Farm & Nursery\, Seven Bends Nursery\, Watermark Woods and  Yellow House Natives. The Sale takes place at the visitor parking lot (access via main entrance on Old Waterford Road). Our knowledgeable volunteers will be on hand to help you choose plants suited to your space and goals. We’ll also have TLC\, a fertilizer and deer deterrent\, to give away. \nAt Loudoun Wildlife Conservancy’s information booth you can learn about our programs and how you can volunteer for them. Our Wild Shop will be there with merchandise for sale.  Want to learn more about some of our community partners? SUMMARY:Salt Watch Kickoff
DESCRIPTION:Join Loudoun Wildlife Conservancy at Rust Library to launch our fifth season of Salt Watch\, a hands-on community science program that tracks road salt pollution in our local streams and advocates for smarter salting practices. \nAmy Ulland\, Stream Monitoring Program Coordinator\, will begin with a presentation about why monitoring chloride levels matters for clean water\, wildlife\, and healthy communities and share some of our past data. Then participants will take part in a hands-on demo to see just how easy Salt Watch is to do. \nThis project is perfect for families\, couples\, individuals and school groups. Monitoring takes less than 15 minutes\, supplies are free\, and volunteers collect data once a month year-round\, with additional sampling after winter weather events. DESCRIPTION:Loudoun Wildlife Conservancy needs your help to protect JK Black Oak Wildlife Sanctuary and the nearby rural communities! Attend the second Route 15 Lucketts Bypass public input meeting at the Lucketts Community Center (see map below). Based on additional analysis as well as feedback gathered during the June 4\, 2025 meeting and the survey results\, the county will provide their recommended alignments and upcoming steps in the process. Members of the public will be able to provide comments at the meeting or by using an online comment form through October 24. \nNo prior preparation is required for this second public input meeting\, but you may want to read the background on the project. SUMMARY:Big Sit at Algonkian Park
DESCRIPTION:Loudoun Wildlife Conservancy is excited to be partnering with NOVA Parks for another Big Sit at Algonkian Regional Park. Join us for five minutes or all day as we compete with other birders around the world to see and hear as many bird species as we can from within a 17-foot circle. We’ll also have info about Loudoun Wildlife programs and a visit from live ambassador animals from NOVA Parks \nWhat is a Big Sit?\nSome people have compared it to a tailgate party for birders. It is a worldwide annual competition to see how many species of bird can be seen from one stationary location in 24 hours or less. \nWho should attend?\nAnyone interested in birding from beginner to advanced. If you’re new to birding\, you can learn more about it and meet other birders. If you’re an experienced birder\, bring your skills and help us ID some species. This is a stationary location\, so it’s great for people who aren’t interested in a long bird walk. Plus\, we’ll be there all day\, so it’s great for those who prefer to sleep late. \nDetails\nWe will be set up close to the parking lot just west of the boat ramp (view location) with views of the river\, a wildflower meadow\, a grassy field\, a wooded tree line and wide open sky. We will be there from 7:00am to 7:00pm to count as many bird species as we can see or hear. You can stop by for a few minutes to say hi or bring a chair and stay as long as you like.  No registration required. \nIn case of inclement weather cancellation information will be posted here and on the Loudoun Wildlife Conservancy Facebook page. \nQuestions: Contact plewis@loudounwildlife.org.

DESCRIPTION:Each autumn\, hawks migrate south along the Blue Ridge. John and Kevin Denice will lead a field trip to Waggoner’s Gap in PA\, about a 2.5-hour drive from Leesburg. Waggoner’s Gap is one of the premier hawk-watching sites in our area. If the weather cooperates\, we should see a wide diversity of birds of prey\, including Golden Eagles. Begun in 1899\, these surveys are held all over North America\, with the results used to better understand bird populations and dynamics. Our count circle has a 15-mile diameter and covers 177 square miles of Loudoun’s countryside: north to Waterford\, south to Aldie\, east to Ashburn\, and west to Purcellville. Tom’s entire professional life has been devoted to creating and teaching award-winning photography and cinematography of natural subjects (see some of his images below)\, plus dramatically improving the visual quality and readability of existing medical images\, including X-rays\, angiograms\, CT scans\, and more. His patented image post-processing software has been developed for the benefit of physicians who rely upon those images for correct diagnosis and healing. \nJan Mul\, Executive Director of the Loudoun Photo Club\, will speak to the opportunities for virtually anyone with a camera to join a group of individuals dedicated to the art and fun of photographing people\, places\, and things of interest tothem.
