SUMMARY:JK Black Oak Wildlife Sanctuary Open House
DESCRIPTION:Please Note: Pets are not allowed at the Sanctuary. \nExperience the beauty of JK Black Oak firsthand and learn more about the vernal pools\, restoration projects and ongoing community science projects.  During this open house\, the sanctuary is open to the public with no registration required. \nStop by the Loudoun Wildlife booth to learn about our programs and our advocacy efforts to protect JK Black Oak from the Rt. 15 Lucketts bypass. \nFor the first time ever\, several of the trails will be open for self-guided tours with information signs along the way and roving volunteers to answer questions.  We will also have three information stations staffed with volunteers where you can learn about: \n\nAmphibians and reptiles – Which species have been found and why amphibians require vernal pools.\nBat monitoring – Acoustic monitoring has documented nine species of bats.\nForest restoration – We are using deer exclosure fences to protect tree seedlings.\n\nParking will be in the field at the corner of Stumptown and New Valley Church Roads in Lucketts\, and a volunteer will direct you to the entrance of the sanctuary. \nAlthough you will be walking on mowed trails\, ticks may still be present and insect repellant is recommended. \nIn conjunction with the open house\, there are two guided walks that require registration: a bird walk at 8:00am and a nature walk at 11:00am. Limit 16 (ages 5 and up).  Registration required. \nSweet Run State Park is located just north of Neersville.  Directions to the Sawmill Road parking lot:  from eastern Loudoun County\, take Rt 7 west to Rt 9 west; at the light after Hillsboro traffic circles\, bear right onto Harpers Ferry Road; turn left on Sawmill Rd (about 5 miles). SUMMARY:Celebrate Birds: Big Sit at Algonkian Park
DESCRIPTION:Loudoun Wildlife Conservancy is excited to be partnering with NOVA Parks for a Big Sit at Algonkian Regional Park. \nWhat is a Big Sit?\nSome people have compared it to a tailgate party for birders. We will set up in one stationary location and see how many species we can count from that spot. At our last spring Big Sit we saw 69 species of birds. This spring we are hoping to beat that number. \nWho should attend?\nAnyone interested in birding from beginner to advanced. If you’re new to birding\, you can learn more about it and meet other birders. If you’re an experienced birder\, bring your skills and help us ID some species. This is a stationary location\, so it’s great for people who aren’t interested in a long bird walk. Plus\, we’ll be there all day\, so it’s great for those who prefer to sleep late. \nDetails \nSmoke the Screech Owl \nWe will be set up just west of the boat ramp with views of the river\, a wildflower meadow\, a grassy field\, a wooded tree line and wide open sky. It is also close to the parking lot.  (View location.) We will be there from 6:00am – 8:00pm to count as many bird species as we can see or hear. You can stop by for a few minutes to say hi or bring a chair and stay as long as you like.  No registration required. \nNOVA Parks Roving Naturalist\, Matt Felperin\, will join us at the Big Sit between 12:00 to 1:30 pm and 5:30 to 8:00 pm with some of his animal ambassador friends. During previous Big Sits\, Matt has brought Smoke the Screech Owl and other raptors\, along with  amphibians and reptiles.
