SUMMARY:Central Loudoun Christmas Bird Count
DESCRIPTION:Join Loudoun Wildlife Conservancy as we participate in the National Audubon Society’s annual Christmas Bird Count. Begun in 1899\, these surveys are held all over North America\, with the results used to better understand bird populations and dynamics. Our count circle has a 15-mile diameter and covers 177 square miles of Loudoun’s countryside: north to Waterford\, south to Aldie\, east to Ashburn\, and west to Purcellville. Everyone is welcome; new birders are teamed with experienced birders\, and every eye and ear helps. If you are interested in participating for just a couple of hours or the entire day\, sign up here. Registration required by December 26. \nView the Central Loudoun Count Circle as an interactive map. \nQuestions: contact Joe Coleman at  jcoleman@loudounwildlife.org or Bryan Henson at bhenson@loudounwildlife.org.

SUMMARY:Annual Butterfly Count: Let’s Count Butterflies!
DESCRIPTION:This is the 29th year that Loudoun Wildlife Conservancy has participated in the North American Butterfly Association (NABA) annual Butterfly Count. Our efforts give researchers at NABA a snapshot of how our favorite pollinators are faring. Teams of experts\, enthusiasts\, and novices spend the day hunting high and low for as many butterflies as they can find within the count circle — it’s a big area and we need your help!  No experience necessary and all ages are welcome. There is a $3 fee per adult\, but Loudoun Wildlife Conservancy members and children under 18 participate for free. Your participation makes a difference!  Registration required. \nLearn more about the count (including the map of the count circle) and register here. \nAre you thinking about joining the count but have a few questions? Participate in one of the butterfly walks in June and July to learn more about butterflies and how to identify them. The walks are free\, family-friendly events. \nQuestions: Contact info@loudounwildlife.org.

SUMMARY:Postponed: Introduction to Bluebird Monitoring (Virtual)
DESCRIPTION:Due to unforeseen circumstances\, this virtual program has been postponed. A new date will be announced soon\, so please check back. \nIn the meantime\, you may want to watch the Bluebird Monitoring 2023 Kickoff video on YouTube. \nDuring this virtual program\, you will learn or review bluebird basics: habitat\, nest building\, egg laying and hatching timetables.  Other cavity nesters and their predators will also be discussed as well as measures to keep fledglings safe.  Data from recent years will be reviewed\, and an overview of the fifty plus trails that are monitored by Loudoun Wildlife volunteers will be given.  The information shared in this program is necessary for anyone interested in volunteering as a Bluebird Monitor for the 2024 season. \nQuestions: Contact bluebird@loudounwildlife.org. \nNew Bluebird Volunteers:\nIf you are interested in becoming a Bluebird Monitor and have not already reached out\, please complete the Bluebird Volunteer Form and let us know the area you would like to monitor (e.g.\, Leesburg\, South Riding\, etc.) in the comments sections of the form. We will do our best to place you in the location of your choice. Please note that Monitor positions are filled on a first come\, first served basis. \nReturning Bluebird Volunteers:\nWe recommend checking all the boxes on your trail by March 10 to make sure they are cleaned and ready. Bluebirds start looking for boxes in early March and will not choose a place that has an old nest in it. They will build their first nest in mid- to late March and may lay the first egg as early as March 26. We recommend starting to monitor your trail on or about March 24 this year.
