SUMMARY:Work Day at JK Black Oak Wildlife Sanctuary
DESCRIPTION:JK Black Oak Wildlife Sanctuary is a beautiful 89-acre wildlife preserve located in Lucketts that is owned by Loudoun Wildlife Conservancy. On this work day\, we’ll be at the Pin Oak vernal pool planting native trees and removing Autumn Olive that has sprouted up inside the exclosure fence.  If we have time\, we’ll also remove invasives outside the fence. Additional information and directions to the site will be provided a few days prior to the work day. Due to the environmentally sensitive habitat and rare species\, JK Black Oak is not open for general public access. 20 volunteers needed – volunteers must be at least 16 years old to participate.   Registration required.   \nPlease note: Work days require physical activity\, which may be strenuous\, such as digging and sawing in weedy\, overgrown areas. Please be aware that poison ivy and ticks may present.  Long pants and sturdy closed-toe shoes are required. Gardening/work gloves and insect repellant are recommended. If you do not enjoy working in these types of conditions\, you should seek out other volunteer opportunities. \nQuestions: Contact sferguson@loudounwildlife.org. \nRegistration is full. If space becomes available due to cancellations\, we will re-open registration.

SUMMARY:Less Screen - More Green! Beginning a Nature Journaling Practice - cancelled
DESCRIPTION:Looking for an alternative for you and your child to reduce time spent on a device? Would you like to feel more comfortable supporting your child’s literacy journey? Join Loudoun Wildlife Conservancy for just the solution! In the practice of nature journaling\, you use words and pictures to record observations\, questions\, and connections on the pages of a notebook. Why keep a nature journal? Whether you’re 5 or 95\, it’s a lens to help focus your attention and enrich your experience of the natural world. Journalers say it helps them discover\, think\, remember\, be curious\, have reverence\, cultivate joy\, make connections – shall we go on?! Join us for a FREE\, creative and playful way to begin a practice that you can enjoy anywhere and anytime. It’s easy to begin and learn\, and an alternative ‘addictive practice’ you can explore as a family. (your child might already be participating in Outdoor Learning since we’ve been training teachers since 2010!) We’ll have blank journals for those who register\, but bring a favorite notebook or drawing utensils if you like. You don’t need to identify as an artist to begin; we’ll teach simple sketching practices to get you started. This class is designed for families and is appropriate for students K-12; please ensure children under 12 are accompanied by an adult. This event is at Claude Moore Park Pavilion #1. \nWe will reschedule to another date.
